What catched my eye was an amazing article in Wired by Chris Anderson and Michael Wolff named “The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet”. They kick off the article with the remark that two decades after its birth, the WWW is in decline, as simpler, sleeker service – think apps – are less about searching and more about getting. We can delve much deeper into this article that I greatly recommend you to read, but in a certain way it’s all said in this opening.

Our daily reality working with tier one brands such as CNN, Rabobank and major publishers around the globe is that they would like to create one uniform quality experience over different devices with a maximum reach. Today’s web reality is not there yet, even more so when using the tiny mobile browser.

As Anderson and Wolff phrase it brilliantly: “Over the past few years, one of the most important shifts in the digital world has been the move from the wide-open Web to semi closed platforms that use the Internet for transport but not the browser for display. It’s driven primarily by the rise of the iPhone model of mobile computing, and it’s a world Google can’t crawl, one where HTML doesn’t rule. And it’s the world that consumers are increasingly choosing, not because they’re rejecting the idea of the Web but because these dedicated platforms often just work better or fit better into their lives (the screen comes to them, they don’t have to go to the screen). The fact that it’s easier for companies to make money on these platforms only cements the trend. Producers and consumers agree: The Web is not the culmination of the digital revolution”.

We truly hope that major companies come to terms. Our take is that mobile apps are here to stay for the coming years. Apps are about getting and web is about searching! What’s your take?

July 23, 2010

Amersfoort, the Netherlands – Service2Media, developer of future proof mobile applications, is proud to deliver the first Apple iPad application in the Netherlands for the Telegraaf. The iPad is officially available in the Netherlands as of today.

Through an intensive creative and technical collaboration between the mobile experts of the Telegraaf and Service2Media we have created a unique application concept to provide tablets such as the iPad with content and interactivity. The innovative usage of in-article-videos is a good example of this. Or the possibility to purchase a new subscription through the tablets transaction system for instance.
Beforehand the roadmap for the development of new tablets and operating systems has been taken into account. So new devices from manufacturers such as Android, Dell and Microsoft can easily be adopted into the innovative tablet platform. Within the range of digital news delivery the Telegraaf tablet application will get its own special place and identity next to the printed paper, website and the exciting mobile apps.

For mobile applications, including those for tablets, it is becoming increasingly important to have a full-lifecycle approach that’s future-proof: (1) they have to support the full diversity of existing and future mobile devices and operating systems, (2) they should always have a consistent and superior native user experience and (3) the total cost of ownership should be affordable across its full life-cycle. For organizations such as the Telegraaf, where mobile is an essential part of the core strategy, there is no room for disposable mobile applications and stand-alone web apps. Service2Media is supporting the complete cycle of design, build, testing and appstore management and maintenance of mobile application portfolios. This future proof approach matches well with the ambitions of the Telegraaf. Today with the introduction of the Telegraaf iPad application, and later on with the introduction of applications for new devices and operating systems.

‘We are very pleased that the Telegraaf is happy with the quality of the full-lifecycle iPad application we have developed for them, and that they see us as a trusted partner for support and development in the world of an ever increasing variety of mobile devices and lack of standards’. Geert Kolthof, CEO Service2Media.

The Telegraaf HD application is now available for download from the Apple App Store.

Are all mobile application platforms and manual approaches future proof? There are technological differences between:

•	Mobile web

•	Silo native app development

•	SDKs for multiple device development

•	Lifecycle component platform

Service2Media’s R&D team has invested five years in building M2Active, our proprietary Mobile Application Lifecycle Platform which provides full lifecycle, native app experiences.

M2Active and optional mobile web encompass all mobile app lifecycle stages, from design to app store maintenance. These stages need to be aligned with an ever-increasing list of device and OS technology variation. Not all mobile app technology platforms offer a way to do this.

M2Active allows applications to run on multiple devices and OSs from a single code base. It supports both application and browser paradigms in the same platform and enables a variety of different context services.

The mobile industry’s appetite for device and OS lifecycle innovation needs to be balanced with the high corporate demand for mobile application lifecycle stability. M2Active provides the highest level of performance and availability possible. And all mobile applications built on our platform are future proof.

Read more about how we help technologists meet their challenges in our Technology section.

Today the dutch Rabobank added another innovative iPhone application to their mobile services: Rabo Rekening Delen. This application helps you to ‘Share the bill’ amongst friends, by dividing costs and sending reminders to the participants of the bill.

Putting money together for a trip or sharing the bill afterwards? ‘Rabo Rekening Delen’ makes splitting a bill easy and makes the financial administration as simple as a few taps on your iPhone.
If you buy concert tickets for your friends for example or just paid for the restaurant bill, you can make a new item in the Rabo Rekening Delen application. You can then indicate who has to share the bill and how they pay their share. You can choose to pay in cash, by transfer or with the Rabobank service ‘Rabo SMS Betalen’, another application with which you can make direct payments using text messaging.

When starting up the application you can make an account with your email address, so it is not necessary to have an actual bank account at the Rabobank. When sending payment requests or reminders to your friends they immediately see the amount they have to pay, which payment options they can use and the bank account to which they have to transfer the money. After making the payment they can change the status of their payment within their own Rabo Rekening Delen application on their iPhone or on the Rabobank Rekening Delen website. So friends who don’t have an iPhone can still use this service with you!

To learn more about the Rabo Rekening Delen service or to register for the service visit the special Rabo Rekening Delen website.

‘Going dutch’ with your friends has never been this easy! Download it now from the App Store!

The Rabo Rekening Delen application for iPhone and Mobile Web were both developed by Service2Media.
