Background Story: The App supports UPC’s new strategy of bridging the traditional television world with the internet world. The App is part of UPC’s new anywhere platform. Key in this strategy is unlocking tv and set-top-box functionality, such as remote recording, through applications across multiple mobile devices. Towards the end of 2011 first the iPhone app will become available, later other platforms such as Android and Blackberry will follow.
From Service2Media’s point of view this is a classic and advanced ‘orchestration App’ giving users control over a sequence of events, and interacting with multiple devices, to program and manage their viewing schedule. It required back-end integration with UPC’s servers that hten set the programing on the set top box. It also uses our free to use push technology to issue reminders to watch scheduled programs and offer suggested items to view.
Functionality: the UPC Mobile EPG App enables users to use their mobile phone as a remote control. The App allows users to access and display an Electronic Programming Guide on their mobile phone. Users can then use their phone to set their UPC Mediabox to record a program and set reminders on their UPC DVR.
