
High functionality in a banking app.
Background Story: Service2Media has been the mobile partner for Rabobank’s App portfolio since 2008. The successful introduction of this banking App in 2010, which was the first of it’s kind, has forced all other Dutch banks to follow. Innovation in the App has continued through multiple iterations, illustrated by the deployment on multiple OS’s, the introduction of automatic scanning and recognition of payment details in giro forms using OCR techniques and layered security model and mobile IDEAL.
Service2Media’s partnership has brought us deep insight into the internals of financial services. We are also working closely with Rabobank’s security and business teams to find the right balance between security and user experience. For example many banks, including Rabobank use e-readers for authorization. Rabobank considers the combination e-reader and mobile as not ideal for mobile banking. Up to a limit of EUR 1000, mobile banking is now possible without an e-reader, as long as the balancing account is known. Regular audits keep us focussed on secure coding and security processes. Joint innovation with Rabobank is assured by delivering various Proofs-of-Concept in multiple areas of mobile finance.
Functionality: The Banking App offers support for the main features clients are used to on the internet banking and streamlines the functionality to maximise the capabilities of the mobile device. For example checking on the device to see if you have made a payment to the person you are entering details to pay, and automatically filing in name and other payment details downloaded from the Rabobank server.
We have also tried to make using the banking App fun. There is a nice feature built into the application to choose the amount. The euro symbol is next to a textbox, you jump to a separate screen where you can see pictures of coins and paper money. You drag downward to set the total. So you get a visual overview of how much money is involved.
Customers of Rabobank that have installed the Rabobank Mobile Banking App can now also pay their mobile purchases from webshop bol.com as easily as their online purchases, using a mobile version of the internet payment method IDEAL. IDEAL is a protocol for online payment transactions directly from a bank account, that is widely accepted and regarded as safe.
The new mobile IDEAL payment is facilitated by starting the Rabobank Banking App on an iPhone. The App starts automatically once a payment request is issued on the merchant’s mobile site. The transaction is then authorized by the user in the App, with account number and access code,before being redirected to the merchants mobile site.
